Adelaide Bike Kitchen - A night to remember

Mikael Colville Anderson speaking at the Bike Kitchen.

The Velo-City Global 2014 conference brought hundreds of international delegates to South Australia to discuss cycling culture, policy and infrastructure. Adelaide Bike Kitchen brought this conversation to the public, hosting an open event called Velo For’um All.

Providing an evening of “perspectives from the pedal level”, the forum brought together a panel of experts from the conference and the wider community to discuss local issues surrounding cycling and change. Politicians rubbed shoulders with international planners, grassroots activists and commuter cyclists to imagine a more cycling friendly Adelaide.

Speakers included Greens MLC Mark Parnell, cultural policy expert Ianto Ware, helmet law activist Sue Abbot, architect Steven Fleming and urban mobility expert Mikael Colville-Anderson. Topics of discussion ranged from personal experience to state policy to international standards, and urged the public to continue the discourse and take action to improve conditions for cyclists.

Talks were followed by dinner prepared by ABK volunteers, drinks and local music. Many left inspired for a brighter transport future, with delegates calling the forum a highlight of their Adelaide visit.

Adelaide Bike Kitchen hosts weekly workshops to promote cycling through learning DIY bike mechanics, every Wednesday 5-8 pm at 22 Gibson St, Bowden. www.adelaidebikekitchen.com
